Historical Overview of AlFurqan Mosque

The establishment of the Al Furqan Centre is associated with the migration of Somali Muslim families to Manchester – fleeing war in the early 1990s. Once a community structure began to emerge, concerns grew regarding the cultural identity of the community’s children. Consequently, the community worked to construct a Centre that would be suitable for establishing their five daily prayers, community gatherings, Islamic festivals, and teach the children Qur’an and the sciences of Sharia. In 1997, this idea became a reality by renting a room for £500 per month. As the community recognised the impact of the Centre for themselves as individuals, for their children and for the progress of the community, they decided in 1999 to rent the adjacent room as an extension of this Centre.

In 2001, the number of worshippers and beneficiaries of the Centre increased exponentially. Thanks to Allah, Al-Furqan Islamic Centre became one of the most important Islamic centres in Manchester. It was a sanctuary for the entire Muslim community diaspora in all its colours, shades and ethnicities. In 2004, the community managed to rent a three-storey building (at a cost of £3,500 per month) to accommodate more than 1,700 worshipers. Then, Allah bestowed them with the ability to buy the entire building for £350,000 in 2009, which helped achieve many spiritual, educational, cultural and social services.

Now, to satisfy the needs of our growing community, we make use of the entire unity building for a wide variety of community activities. For example:

  • Lectures
  • Conferences
  • Friday sermons
  • Youth and after-school clubs
